Why we chose it
This Florida and California-based company believes in making products that are eco-conscious, and are as natural and organic as possible. Not to mention, Sun Bum developed the Signature Sunscreen line for those days that we live for. The premium, Mineral Based Moisturizing Sunscreen is specifically designed to offer the very best broad-spectrum protection to those who work and play hard in the sun. Their products are firmly grounded in good science. The result is superior sun protection that not only works better, but is good for you too.
Why we love it
It’s the only brand of sun protection we trust for our babies. Sun Bum’s plant-based collections is super gentle and uses the best ingredients for delicate and sensitive skin. Having our kids has made us get serious about sun protection. There is some scary stuff out there about both the negative effects of the sun, and the safety of drugstore brands of sunscreen. But Sun Bum makes sun safety a no brainer. Their products go on beautifully, are actually good for you, and they work – no synthetic fragrances, sulfates, parabens or phthalates.
Who is it for?
Organic sunscreen fans looking for broad spectrum SPF.
A Deeper Look into Sun Protection
Sunlight is made up of two types of rays: UVA and UVB. UVA rays will penetrate the deep dermal layers of the skin, leading to premature aging and wrinkles. About 90% of the visible signs of facial aging is due to sun damage. UVB rays are what cause sunburns. They also play a central role in the development of skin cancer.
Sunscreen Tips
- Wear daily, regardless of the season or weather or cloud coverage
- Aim for SPF 30 or higher
- Apply the right amount: 1oz for the whole body; ¼ tsp for the face
- Apply 15 min before sun exposure
Chemical vs Mineral Sunscreen?
Chemical sunscreens absorb and dissipate UVA/UVB rays. They are made of very fine particles, which means they go on easily but are absorbed into the body to some degree. While they are not our favourite type of sunscreen, we know they are convenient and generally safe so long as you pick the right one. Look for a formulation that is organic, at least 3% avobenzone and contains no oxybenzone (which has been linked to hormone disruption, early puberty and infertility). Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, physically block or reflect UVA/UVB rays using large particles that are not absorbed systemically. They offer superior safety and sun protection, but tend to go on a little thicker.
What should I use?
Mineral Sunscreen: If you plan to be outside for long periods of time or sweating a lot. Safe for babies and kids and what we recommend adults to use especially on their face.
Chemical: For easy spray application for the body.
